I had this issue with my ear-bone mic.

Press the headset plug HARD into the radio. I had the issue last summer. I revisited again in Jan 2014. I found that the plug wasn't all the way in yet. I had to push it again and it went in further.

Once its all the way in, it should work.

Is this a real Sordins set or a replica? If it is a replica, that is your problem. I have an acoustic earpiece and external mic that work with zero issues. Used a replica ComTac that worked for one game, and then same thing as you; bad sound quality and couldn't transmit even though when I would hit the PTT you could hear I was transmitting, but nadda came through from the mic.

FIX FOUND! : if you are using replicas try to tape or find something to apply pressure onto the ptt and the radio to hold it together better!

sorry for the late fix guys

Also, generally replica PTT/cans are wired differently to the real-deal...

To use my Z-Tac PTT on real Sordins I had to swap two wires inside the PTT (first and last? can't recall now) and it now works like a charm. If you're in this boat google around as there's threads telling you which wires are backwards.

This is very common with the UV-5R...taping is the best solution...

on a side note... the UV-5RE doesn't have this problem and almost the same price
