Belaclava Questions
Wanting to get a belaclava but wondering what kind to get. I really have no interest in the 3 hole versions because I want something to protect my teeth. I weat PB goggles over my glasses for eye protection.
Will there be fogging problems? What are the pro/cons of nomex? What are the pro/cons of fleece? What are the pro/cons of other materials I have not listed? What colour for what use? (cappat, OD, black) Any tips or first hand use info would be great. Thanks Dave Horton |

Nomex is nice & lightweight & breathes well. Con's are it is thin so dont expect any sort of bb protection at all.
Fleece, hot as shit, gets very irritating to wear. Colour. Whatever works where your playing. Cadpat looks damn nifty but I am YET to find a nomex or similiar thin material cadpat balaclava. If there was one out there, I'd own it by now. Balaclava wont really do much for protecting your teeth, Learn to keep your mouth shut. In all honesty, I've found them to be of little to no use at all on the field. As far as fogging goes, Well depends what make/model of goggles you have. A fleece balaclava fogged the hell out of my goggles (JT Spectra's)but the nomex didnt really do anything. That's my 2 cents on that. |

A balaclava can really help stay warm during cold winter games, but if the temps are above zero - you'll get too hot and will have quite a bit more fogging. For warmer games just use the paintball mask as face/mouth protection, it doesn't look as "1334" as a balaclava but will do a much better job of protecting you, won't get you to overheat easily and will minimize the fogging.

Even the nomex ones cause that much heat to stay in? Does anyone else have some first hand experince with nomex and goggle wearing.

I guess it just depends what you're use to. I wear a thick balaclava the whole length of all the games I play, it doesn't really bother me. it did make my jt goggles fog up faster though so I ended up having to get a G&G goggle fan. from then on I've had no problems.

Hey, Who needs a beard in the summer? Or.......You ever consider a shemagh? They are actually pretty decent at absorbing bb impact & come in a variety of colours. The OD & Black ones looks very good with cadpat. |

i have used a black mil-force nomex balaclava and i did not experience more fogging.
i wear glasses and JT Proflex googles without the mask. the black does attract more heat from the sun so its probably better to grab a tan or OD color.(thats what im doing) anyway. if you do use glasses its probably better to use contacts and make sure you bring eye drops for them incase you get the odd dust in your eyes. have your contacts kit in handy. with a beard. its probably best to shave before game unless its short and stubble. alternatly you can wear a bandana for the forehead and it will absord your sweat for a good part of the day and have a shemagh as the lower face and neck protection. try it out.. if you dont like it.. then try something else =)

If you want to try the Shemagh there is a thread where they show how to tie it. I'll let you find it though.

Armoured Belaclava?
I have been kicking around an idea for a reinforced belaclava,
The idea is to take a standard nomex belaclava and add semi rigid plates to it over vunerable areas, such as over the mouth and the ears, I think I may prototype one with leather reinforcers, to see how it works. Will keep you all posted as to the results

IF protecting your teeth is what you are after, why don't you try a hockey/football mouthguard.
