Need Help Programming My Puxing 888

I would like to use the usb cable that came with my radio. I cannot select the proper com port (com 1 to 4). I was told that the proper drivers are difficult to find.

If anybody has dealt with this and could help me out I would appreciate it.

The best thing is to buy a separate USB to Serial Cable and then get a Serial programming cable. Barring that, you will need to look for a better Prolific chipset driver, as the Asian sourced Puxing/Wouxun programming cables have the Prolific USB to serial in them.

One reason that you might not be able to program it is that another service or program could be reserving that port.

If you need to program it manually in the mean time, I did a write up on it here on ASC.

Also keep in mind that when you do get to program it with the cable, plug your USB cable into your computer, change the COM port to the correct port (I have to do this every time), turn your radio on, and then plug the cable into the radio--in that order.

This forum post might also help you (The Prolific chipset is used in a lot of GPS cables too.)

tried the puxing driver with no success. I can not plug the cable anywhere and get a com port 1-4 anywhere on my pc.
Checked out the website you mentioned, a little extreme for me but thx.

The default COM port for a USB-to-serial bridge is always 7 (it's a virtual com port): if your software only lets you select 1-4 you need to change the virtual com port's settings.

Right click My Computer (desktop) -> manage -> device manager

you should have an entry for something about Prolific USB to Serial Bridge: double click that, click the PORT SETTINGS tab, click Advanced and on the bottom it'll give you a pull down menu for COM Port Number. Set your desired com port # there. If you have physical COM PORTs on your machine (they'll show up in Device Manager under PORTS (COM & LPT) don't use the same numbers!

That's for Win7, the menus might be slightly different in previous Win versions but you should be able to figure it out.

Some basic instructions can be found here:

Thanks Drake. I am using Win7. I tried what you suggested but it will not allow me. Says I do not have "write priviledges". Must be an issue with my security settings. That sure sounded like it would work too.
