Helicopter Helmets for airsoft?
I am thinking about getting an old/used helicopter helmet for use with airsoft (something like a Gentex SPH-4). Why? Well, I kind of want to go for that "shot down pilot" look. It has a built-in Mic. I understand there are adapters to go from flight helmet plugs to regular radios (Icom, etc.), so this is another plus for me.
The SPH-4 has built-in Visor(s) (single or dual depending on the model), but I'm not sure how well those visors would stand up to airsoft BBs. If I were to get the helmet, I would probably wear either Shooting Glasses or some sort of low-profile goggles underneath. I do have some concerns about fog between the visor and the goggles. On the other hand, I could just keep the visors up (or get a helmet without the visors) and wear regular goggles. Do either of these ideas seem feasible? Thanks |

I would not consider the visor "safe", it won't seal around the lower edge.

Low pros or full seal glasses would be nice, but those visors do hug low to the face but they are hard to fog.

Those things are bulky and uncomfortable! Lol, but ya, I considered it at one point as well since we have a few of the CF Gentex ones kicking around being unused at work.

Yeah, I kind of figured that the visors didn't seal all the way around (but you can only tell so much from pictures).
I think I will still get the helmet though, if nothing else, it looks awesome. In either case, I am due for some new goggles. Low-Profile ESS or Revision Bullet Ant goggles seem to be my best option for use with this type of helmet. I definitely won't be wearing it in CQB though. This helmet would probably be okay in more open areas (i.e. not crawling through the bush or inside buildings). Thanks for the help everyone. |

One of the first things downed aircrew ditch so they can start E&E is their helmet but your heart seems set so have at it.

So let me get this straight... you want to run around in a helmet designed to sit and fly an aircraft while wearing?
.... but Obi Wan.. I can't see anything with the blast shield down!

From experience wearing them, there is about a 3/4" gap between the bottom of the visors and your face, so even wearing safety glasses underneath would still expose your eyes to up flying BBs....

More like "Thanks for the freedom of not having to deal with the hard layers of lumpy sizing shells (they use to adjust helmet size inside the shell, by adding or removing the interlocking.... like Lego..... layers). Seriously, the longest I've had to wear one was an hour at a time maybe, never fit right and hurt the forehead and above after maybe 20mins. Got fitted for one properly during the two weeks at I was CFB Gagetown in 2000, even then, past half an hour my head was hurting, little protection from that hard "bubble wrap" stuff! Makes me think they have "adjustable headshape" inserts, and the real aircrew that get issued the helmets actually get soft memory foam lining based upon their actual head shape and size....... So, unless you'd actually get one that would fit your head and be comfortable long enough to finish even a skirmish.....
I'll admit though, you would look cool on the field!!!! Last edited by CDN_Stalker; February 1st, 2012 at 23:44.. |
