Maps

Just to get a new topic going here...

I've been to a few fields with a variety of different maps.

At one, a hand drawn, roughly to scale image of the surrounding area...

At another, a blown up satellite photo from Google.

Is there any place to reliably get topographical or satellite maps of populated areas?

The field I typically play at is in Niagara-area... I'm getting close to drawing out a map.

Canada topographic maps.
I use it all the time.
Not 100% reliable, but still the best, free, starting point to map an erea.

I bough up to date topographic maps of where I usually play or trek, and the online maps are close enough. They just lack important data, such as magnetic declinaison.

I learned how to use a topographic map and compas. Now, with a protractor, I can pinpoint spots with UTM scales, wich are GPS compatible points. If enough people are using this method in large games, I predect a HUGE improvement on milsim management.

My next large milsim will have this implemented.

Why on Tyvek?
You can have your map printed and then plastified. Cost about 20-30$ depending on the map.

A typical topographic map cost 15$.
Check your yellowpage book or whatever it's called to find your local map dealer. Online maps are often more expensive, because they are not a map dealer, juste a retailler.

If you want topo maps of the Niagara area, go to Peninsula Press on Bunting Rd in St Catharines. They did have tons of topos and waterways charts as well (been a couple years since I was in there). The prices weren't too bad, I think less than $10 a sheet.

Just so we're on the same page, by plastified you mean laminated? i.e. laminated between two sheets of plastic?

Tyvek is extremely durable -and- flexible, it folds down really well and if you're in a hurry, just stuff the map into a pocket. I saw a post on... hmm, maybe gear scout which reminded me of SERE maps that I've seen (not to say all SERE maps) have been printed on tyvek.

I think Rite in the Rain paper is a tyvek derivative, and may just end up doing an 11"x17" printed map that way.

Ok I now know what you mean.
Some money notes are made like this. (Australia if I remember right)

Never seen maps like this, but I'd like my maps on Tyvek now hehe.

Here is an example of a Tyvek map that shows how foldable/scrunchable it is.

Printing on Tyvek

If I had to print a map on a special material, I would try to find a local printing office that has a flatbed digital printer... these things can print on almost any kind of material such as fabric, plastic sheets or metal plates, as long as its flat and thin.

I think that a regular map in a plastic carrying case is enough for most people. All those special custom project could make your map cost as much as 50$ and up for something that is either free or bellow 20$.

I agree. Personally, I would go for a regular map... I'm just saying that's a possibility.
