M4 Handguard -> Rail conversion

Hello All,

I want to swap the handguard for a RIS. Can anyone point me to an online guide on doing that? Or is this even too simple for that?

I thought I had an online page book marked but I guess I dont.
Its a fairly easy process. There are a few videos on youtube, granted they are made by kids and teenagers but it should be more than enough to atleast give you an idea on how the procedure works.


The jist of it goes something like this:

- Seperate upper reciever from lower.
-Remove inner barrel and hopup.
-Pull back on the D-ring to release the two halfs of the front grip.
-Remove Flash hider
-Remove front sight
-Twist the D-ring until it and the large nut that attaches to the upper reciever screw off.
-Install your new RAS/RIS
-Put everything back together.

PS.

Be sure to research the threading of the new RAS/RIS that you are purchasing as some threddings vary from company to company and in some instances can require some slight modifcation to fit your upper properly.

Can I keep the batteries wired to the front, or do I have to wire them to the back?

It doesnt have be changed to the back, although alot of people do just because of the addition options and possibilities for larger battery capacity when you house a battery in the rear.
Front wiring can be maintained if you wish by converting to a lipo battery that would fit in your knew handguard, of course running a lipo is at your own risk. An alternate option to that would to conceal your battery in a faux AN/PEQ.

Nothing wrong with it, they just require a lot more care than typical batteries. You have to watch out for overcharging/discharging the battery since it can explode. It can be kept in check with a Balancer that plugs into them.

There's also a risk that if its stored in an open RIS handguard, a BB could hit it. Then BOOM.

IMO if you're gonna run a lipo up front, store it a proper housing (like an AN/PEQ) to prevent it from getting damaged and save yourself the hassles/potential injuries.

If you go lipo route I believe there is also some special material that RC guys use to prevent lipo batteries from exploding/setting fire to their planes.

I believe it was some sort of fabric or fire retardant mesh that you could wrap around it. Anyone else ever see these or heard of them? I was only passing by the information and didn't actually look too deeply into it.

I see there are some buffer tube mounted lipo batteries. Are they any good?
Of couse this would mean i woudl have to convert it to rear wired

Im sure if properly maintained and charged they would perform just as well as any other battery.

something not too complicated would wiring it to the back, get a crane stock, since the G&G battery that comes with it is a 9.6v 1400 Nunchuck Style witch would fit inside a crane stock, plus u can still choose the length you want

In retrospect I should probably state what I wanted in the first place. I want an M4 SOPMOD. I was thinking of getting a stock G&G M4 and bulding it from there. Is that a retarded idea for a newbie?

Instead of buying a new RIS, why dont you just a get the G&G R4 Commando that comes with a RIS and a crane stock? This gun matches the M4 SOPMOD the most if thats what ure aiming for. It was a gun I originally wanted to buy as well.
