Primer for Scope

Hey guys, sorry to make another thread in the newb tank. I have a few questions regarding scope for airsoft rifles.
But first, what I do know:
-AEG's don't have the range for super-high magnification scopes
-ACOG (4x) scopes are more than enough
-Red Dots are better
-I'll be getting a Eo553 replica for 'infantry' role use. The scope will probably be for a DMR-like role. I am planning on installing the scope probably on a longer barrel, I believe 14"? Not the M4 carbine length.

My few questions are:
I want to be able to use a variable magnification scope for spotting, while also being able to be within the 4x range to shoot with. That being said, I spotted (no pun intended) a 3x-9x Tasco scope on EB: http://www.ebairsoft.com/tasco-39x40...cope-p-46.html
Would this fulfill my requirements? It's within 4x range, with higher small magnifications for spotting.

Oh and one more thing: I can't for the life of my figure out what the 40mm refers to. Is that the length of the far lens...? Just a bit curious since I noticed a 50mm version of the same scope.

Thanks guys. Other products are well appreciated too, but hopefully they're not too expensive either.

That scope should be fine. And i believe the 50mm refers to the Lens closest to your eye. But i may be wrong on the latter

Incorrect, it's the other side. The 40mm refers to the objective lens, the one facing the target. The bigger the lens, the more light is let in and the better the sight image is (or should be).

Hit up the local games with iron sights first a few times if you haven't already.

Then you'll get a better idea of what you need. For example out here I can't use anything with magnification, it just tunnels in too much.

Now for a real nice do it all scope the kids on the playground can't say enough good stuff about these.

Personally Scope are not required even for sniping in airsoft as no guns reach far enough to require a scope. that being said, I prefer using magnified optics as it is easier for me to find my target while they're hiding in the bushes. That 3x-9x scope is quite nice, a friend has it and it is what i plan on picking up for my vsr. For a DMR role however just go with the lightest optic with a fixed 3x or 4x magnification you can find. Trust me, weight is a deciding factor in this.

i use this one for my G3sg1 to counter sniper , http://dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.26216 , i use only 3X zoom , just to spot. I dont move a lot so its ok This one is the best sniper scope for the price, you dont need screw driver to adjust the scope .... Nothing beats this. You might want to get this instead : http://dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.13159 , best deal anywhere if you are cheap like me

I looked at those before. Isnt the second link just a red dot?

The first link looks good, but you always take the risk when buying a knockoff/clone product, as it could be POS. (Or so I believe.)

I'm purchasing this soon, as I hear its good. (Has a 1" diameter, so you can put 1" diameter weaver rings around it to connect it to a rail.)

Its 4x with range estimating. http://www.businessvision.net/edge/M...=LESCP%2D432M1

You can buy it from their warehouse in Peterborough, Ontario. Or buy it from their site.

EDIT: They also sell the weaver rings on their site. They sell low, medium, and high sizes. Ask me if you need a link to them, as navigation can be a little tricky on the site.)

AEGs and bolt actions have similar ranges as far as scopes are concerned, don't think the extra 50-100 fps makes that big a difference (50 feet or so is nothing when dealing with higher levels of magnification).

While high magnification may not be useful for aiming (unless you really know what you're doing), magnification can be very useful for identifying shapes in the distance.

ACOGs can be just as annoying to aim with as other scopes and also have a very short eye relief (meaning you need to get your face right up to it to see properly). If you go the ACOG route I'd suggest one of the models with the Docter Sight mounted on top (small, unmagnified red dot).

Red dots aren't "better" but they're definitely a lot simpler to setup and use for the vast majority of people. For airsoft engagement ranges they're also usually amply sufficient.

14" is M4 Carbine length. Dunno which gun you're using for a DMR. It it's an AR series rifle you can easily use the 553 or a red dot in conjunction with a 3-4x magnifier (on a flippable mount).

Like I always say, if you require a scope, get something with low power, like a 3-9x40mm.

3-9 being an ajustable zoom scope starting at 3x and going to 9x.
40mm is the from objective in mm.

40mm is the minimum for field use. 30mm is a bit small and won't gather enough light to see in low light or inside.

50mm is great, but it can get pricy.

Don't go with cheap scope or knockoff is you intend to see something out of your scope. If you want to be a sniper and you will use your scope a lot, a descent quality scope IS required.

Tasco scopes are generally SUPER CRAPPY. They don't gather light correcly, have poor field of view angle and a lot of cromatic aberation in the upper focal lenght (stronger zoom).

I like Bushnell hunting scope. They have a variety to choose from and even their cheapest still have good property. I personnally use the Banner and the Trophy series on my rifles. For about 100-140$ they beat any other scope you might find.

If you want something purely for autentic look, than a replica will work, but it won't be as practical in the field.
