Often what I've seen for vests is a forward facing flag on the chest and either a forward or reversed flag on the back.
It usually comes down to whats available.

I'd say, the reversed flag only goes on the shoulder. The starts always facing the front. For everything else, the standard flag should be used.

US Soldiers don't wear a flag patch on the left arm; just SSI an Qual Tabs.
On backpacks you would use a regular flag; but like Lerch says you can use whatever you can get your hands on. As for the flags inside and outside OCONUS(ie bases in Germany, etc) it is the full color flag. When deployed to a conflict/war (OEF, OIF) IR flags are worn. As for when fighting an enemy that has Night Vision; dunno since the US hasn't fought an Enemy with the same NV capabilities as them. During the Invasion of Iraq they probably faced Iraqis with older Soviet NV; but I dunno if any Insurgents have picked up any NV from Iraqi Army stock. But either way IR patches, Veh Markings, etc were/are used. Last edited by -Skeletor-; June 13th, 2009 at 11:24.. |

Fox is entirely right, stars always lead the way. I'm sure Mike has a better idea as to the operational wear of flags (I never did any work with any US forces, so I don't have a clue), but I know the reversed flag is worn on the right arm.
