AR Scopes
There are two different scopes that I am looking at for my XM177 but I am not an expert in scopes. In addition to targeting, I also intend to use it for recon.
Which one is better? The 4x48mm http://ebaybanned.com/product_info.p...0af1b3dd49f00b or this 4x20 scope... http://www.redwolfairsoft.com/redwol...l?prodID=20453 |

I'm certainly no expert either, but coming from a photography background.... 4x48 will give you better zoom ability....seeing farther. It's twice as powerful.
the 4x20 looks small and compact...might be good for recon, but may limit your ability to scope things out from far away. The 4x48 looks bad-ass too. ha. |

In airsoft, unless you're sniping, everything 4x and over is basically for spotting. The guns simply don't shoot that far.
Pick the 4x20 if you don't want to scope to take up too much of your normal, eye ball field of vision. Pick the 4x48 if you want a better field of vision when using the scope.

Id suggest a good 1-4x scope or if you are looking for just a 4x for your M733 you could get an acog

A-BxC A: Minimum magnification B: Maximum magnification C: Apperture DxC D: Fixed magnification C: Apperture Hence, both scopes have the same power, just one has a larger apperture (viewing window, for lack of a better explanation) than the other. A 48x magnification scope would be farking huge... EDIT: Might as well help the OP... Budget for your scope? |

Ive got a colt scope, looks alot like the 4x20 one. It works great, i find the magnification is not ever to much, but it has the magnification to be able to spot people moving around.

That's what I thought at first, but apparently the 4x48 is 4-13x. It's listed in the specs field below all the pics.

as surebet explained so thoroughly, they are virtually identical, save for the lens size. go with either looks or budget in terms of your deciding factor.

Don't buy the first one, the clarity and build is beyond crap, it actually has 4-13x zoom capability, the reticle is nice however when it is illuminated, you see the blue led and all of the insides.

The bigger the better
Larger is your apperture, clearer will be the image. That is all. I am using a 80$ scope from Walmart. Beats the shit out of most "Airsoft" replicas since it is for REAL firearms. I have a 3-9x40mm I almost always leave it at 3x.. above that, the bb fal down before it can reach what you are looking at. My opinion: Get any scope from Canadian Tire or Walmart. They do a better job than most "Airsoft" replicas, for half the price. |

The second link you posted is just a replica of a standard old Colt M16 scope. You can pick up a real Colt version for $50 just about anywhere. 15 or so years ago they grew on trees. I use one that I had used on the older C7's at work before we got the Elcans. Works great for spotting in airsoft and the price was right

i had the 4x20 and its not a very good scope at all. it inst an actual 4X its onlt like 1.5 maybe 2 lol. not very good eye relief, not clear sight picture.
i would very much reccommend the 4X48. not only is it a illuminated, but a bigger aperature, easy sighting, better eye relief. the choice is easy. |

Just to expand on that, it's a reference to Exit Pupil. Aperture size / Magnification = Exit Pupil so a 48mm scope / 13x mag = ~3.7 The maximum pupil diameter is, on average, about 7-8mm. An exit pupil > 6mm will give you a very bright image, even in low light conditions (i.e., what you're looking at will be brighter through the scope than not.) ~5mm is average. It will give you good clarity in daylight and low light. Below 4mm what you see through the scope will be darker than through plain view. This makes low light use (or even looking into shade) impractical.
