disassembling upper receiver on M4
Hey, I have the SRC M4, just wondering if anyone who's taken there's apart yet help me out here, I took out the mag release, and the two pins but I'm having a heck of a hard time trying to slide the upper receiver off.

its not moving at all? or is it getting snagged?
you shouldn't need to take out the mag release, try pulling on the charging handle as you slide and lift the handle at the same time. |

if its a metal body you probably have to pull the charging handle back, push and push the receiver forward, thats how it is with the metal bodies i've installed before.

Did you already take off the lower receiver?

Bolt cover?
Taking them down is a process, you have to remove pins, mag release, stock, grip, then you can safely remove the lower without damaging your clips as u already did :P mechbox just slides from the upper, it doesnt pull off.

Take the grip off first, then take out the small pin in the middle of the mechbox that holds the mechbox to the receiver (it's located above the trigger). Once those are off, and the stock/buffer tube are removed, then the lower half should slide right off. Once the lower receiver is off, THEN you can go through the process of sliding the mechbox out of the upper receiver, but until you get the lower off, you're going to break things if you force it. The tabs are always the easiest and first things to break. You still need to carefully slide the gearbox out of the upper. The bushings will hook on to the metal tabs (if you still have them on.) You'll need to carefully wedge a flat head screwdriver under the BASE of the tab and lift it enough so that the bushing can pass under. DON'T lift the tabs from the end of it or you'll risk snapping it off. You have to do it from the base. |

well since you broke your tab, you might as well mod the upper reciever so you can break it down without haveing to completley disassemble the gun next time.
cut the two (well the remaining tab) off the other side, and on the right side there is a long tab like deal that you need to cut off as well. pretty much make it so both sides end right after the machined edge of the upper reciever, and look uniform (mirror each other)... make sense? they should be smooth and uniform, your not cutting anything major i should not, you should be able to just grab a pair of pliers and snap the tabs and the lip off. once this is done, there is nothing that will snag the mechbox, mag catch, body pin, front of the mag well. when it coems to break down the gun, you remove the front pin, slide them apart (much like you were doing), but there is that tab on the top of your mechbox that i think tm put there to prevent your gun from slideing completley apart by accident. slide the reciever forward till it catches that tab, then pull the chargeing handle back and lift up on the charging handle to bypass the tab. goes back on the same way reversed. (slide back till just before the tab, pull chargeing handle back and up to go over the tab, continue slideing reciever back. |

Interesting, but I'm still very confused ... got any pictures? Oh yeah I forgot to mention this is the SRC M4 lol, so it is aluminum body.

yea, if its aluminum, its prolly best to use a dremel and cuth the pices away. i have a ca body and bought a g$p body for my other m16 and a hurricane for my m4. i think the hurricane was the only aluminum body which i cut with side cutters and filed down...
anywho, i actually JUST did this mod to a mate m16 in the field on sunday. i couldnt find a pic to referance, and i dont have any rifles that i havent modded. pretty much you want the bottom of the upper reciever to be all the same, cut and shave the two tabs, and then depending on the bottom there might be an additional tab that the body tab was attatched to under the forward assist. shave that down so its flush and looks like the other side of the reciever. the reiever should be the same either side, from the middle of the reciever back... flush (same - no lip or tabs, just reciever). if your still confused, take a pic of both sides of the reciever and send em to me, ill show you in the pic. |

When we took my SRC apart, you pop the two pins, and you have to really pull like a motherfucker to seperate the upper and lower receiver.
When we got it almost seperated, you have to be careful because the hop-up unit snags on the upper receiver, so you kind of have to lift and pull at the same time to clear it. Any questions, just let me know.
