CIRAS ????

Hey guys I hate to ask such a noob question, but I have searched 1337tactical and other websites to find an answer. But nothing yet, What is the difference between a maritime and land CIRAS
I noticed the maritime has a loop of webbing under you chin and the land has a little flap on the right shoulder (what is that for, recoil pad???) and it appears the couberbun (sp) is different on each.

Let me know and thank you

The maritime has a different closure systeme than the land version.
Look closely at both without pouches. You will see the front panel, where the maritime version don't have flaps on it, and the land version has.

thanks fox what is the reason for the different system? is there a comfort difference.... I just don't to drop $500 on a maritime and relize days later I should have purchased a land version or vice versa

The land version wraps around and does up in the front and the maritime version does up on the sides.

what that means is the land is easier to fit properly, but the maritime is easier to get on and off. i had a land myself to start, but ended up with a maritime. on a mar. you just leave the one side open and slide it on over your head and do it up. where as the land you open it up from the front. the downside is, you cant put much pouches on the side of the m or you wont be able to open it, but then with the L you cant put your pouches all on the font (unless you get 2 singles between 2 doubles) or you wont be able to open it. make sence!? lol.

get either or, its no big difference, you wont regret it one way or another, they just have minor differences and features. but i will say this tho, the maritime seems to "ride" higher under your chin, the land is cut a little lower. but all in all i would reccommend the land.

The little pad you're seeing on the land is the pull tab for the R in CIRAS(Combat Integrated Releasable Armour System). It has a metal cord that runs through all the seprate components of the vest and through the pad, so when you are shot or drowning of weight, you or someone else can instantly dissolve the vest into its parts to free you.

The land has it drag strap on the back and the maritime on the front, presumably you would rather be dragged on your back on land I suppose. I don't see that it would matter much which side it was on on the maritime as you'de probably release it if you were overboard... perhaps to help pull you up over the side of a craft.

FWIW, although the land opens on the front, you can use 8 single lines of molle worth of pouches over the cover flap (4 mag pouches for example). It has a velcro and snap to hold the cover down. When you need to get out, you pop the snap and lift the cover free of its velcro and the pouches on it simply lift with it, no biggie. Also, I only ever open one side myself and slide in and out.

I've heard it spelled and pronounced cummberbund, or cumberbund BTW, both seem correct and yes, both versions of the CIRAS have one and it does help a lot to stabalise the fit.

Thats my 4.5 cents worth!

These are my Eagle CIRAS. The Land version is in Coyote Brown and the Maritime in Ranger Green
Side opening pic of the Maritime CIRAS

Front opening of the Land CIRAS

The Land version has alot more webbing cross straps for mounting MOLLE pouches.

Side release cable pull tab of the Land and top release of the Maritime.

Both versions of the Eagle CIRAS share the same rear panel. The drag strap is located in the rear of both versions. The front sections are also the same size but with the obvious differences in the release cable location and the velcro pannel release. With the Maritime release cable located on top, it may seem to ride higher than the Land version.

Depending on what you choose for your loadout pouches, you should be able to decide on which version is better for you. They both take off and put on with the same ease for me. Both have similar comfort while wearing. Flip a coin if you still can't decide or buy both.

I highly recommend the Phantom brand repro of the CIRAS. Half the price of the genuine article and bombproof construction.

The US Navy insisted on several changes to the Land version before they would order it. When it came to the placement of the release tab, the Navy felt that having a single location would reduce the confusion in an emergency to find the tab. Also, they didn't like the tabs to be located on the sides as they found that it could be accidentally released. Best place they decided was under the chin. These changes together with a shorter external cummerbund, produced the version called the MAR-CIRAS (Maritime). The original Army's version was called MC-CIRAS (Land).

So I got a Phantom CIRAS Land in OD. Wow am I happy I purchased the Phantom over the HK replicas I was looking at on ebay. But damn is that a process to fitting right, Thanks for all the help.

Does anyone know if any companies make a backpack that can attach to the back of a CIRAS via MOLLE? I haven't had much luck searching.
