Combat Boots

My daughter has a problem with wearing combat boots. She has fairly pronounced ankle spurs that don't bother her at all unless she wears combat boots. When she wears boots, her spurs end up bleeding and she can barely walk within 30-60 minutes. Needless to say, this really puts a damper on her enjoying a game. We've tried most of the "issue" and some work types without success, but have not gone to a podiatrist as yet. Before we do, has anyone else had this type of issue or know of a boot that might be a bit better in this situation?

Have you tried a boot with a softer side? I'm thinking along the lines of a jungle boot.

Get her to tape up the ankle and then wrap in myoflex the stretchy stuff for sprains. Next try her in a side zip boot.

edit> you can also try a desert boot like the ones wheelers sells for rather cheap. I found them very comfortable.

I have a simialr problem. When I was younger playing hockey, I had a hard time finding skates that would fit as my ankle spurs are pronounced. My dad used to use cloth and stuff it in larger skates to make them fit me better. Then Bauer came out with a skate that you heated then wore to form the gel pads exactly to me. This was in 1985 and I assume that this technology must be available in add-on pads for all sorts of applications. My skates were $400 (a huge sum in those days), but there may be pads available in places like pharmacys in the sports aids aisle, or in sporting goods stores.

I played hockey competitively and saw some of the fellas putting a JELLY type of second skin on their ankles.

This stuff is thick and sticky. It definatly would be worth a shot.

You might have to some thinner wrap on it to keep it from moving...

You can probably get it at any pharmacy..

I think burn victims use it as well?!

You could try some boots from the Magnum line made by HiTec. Super comfortable, soft sides and decent support. I wear them all the time and love them.

I wild guess here: Go to your local R. Nicholls and make her try the HAIX boots. They are well padded and soft on the sides. Plus, it's a mesh like goretex pith some leather "armor" plates, not just a leather boot. It's very flexible and light.

Do you mean she has pronounced ankle bones, or she has extra bone protrusion known as a spur?

Spurs usually form off the heel, I am just curious which one it is?

Regardless, she may need a custom boot, or she may have to get her boot stretched into a shape that fits her.

In the mean time, she can use goretex socks and "Bodyglide". It's a non water soluble lubricant that reduces friction. Stuff last for hours (I know cause I use it for really long weighted rucks) and doesn't sweat off.

The Oakley SI line fits like a running shoe, I have HEARD similar things about the new Blackhawk boot which seems to be BHI's only decent original product.

Definately a spur. It sticks out the back of the ankle about a 1/4", about 1 1/2" above the heel. More in ankle territory than heel, but probably technically a heel spur. She's tried wrapping them with gauze and cotton wadding for padding (didn't help much), but we haven't tried the gel type pads. She's tried US Jungle boots, CDN Garrison boots and the CF Goretex boots and while the goretex ones are "better", she still has a problem. Being a student, she doesn't really have the funds for different boots. So we're just rrying to find something that can work with her current boots if possible.

Thanks all, we'll try the gel packs and see what happens from there.
