UHF Tactical Headsets

For those of you running UHF, where do you grab headsets for it? Barring Comtrex; charging $40 fuckin bucks for shipping is bullshit. I'm looking for headsets for a Yaesu at the moment...

I've been looking at headsets on this site - www.tacticalcommand.com, and it looks like they will make them up for just about any radio. Does anybody have any experience with them? They're pricey, but that's the name of the game eh...

Thanks for any help.

Brent

What type of connector do you use for your radio?

Radioworld carries (sometimes) surveillance-type earbuds and PTT switches for Yaesu or Motorola.

I have a set of Peltor Comtacs wired in to the radio via the PTT. That's not a cheap option tho, you're looking at several hundred for the headset alone, more for the attachments to the radio.

I went through comtrex, but I went through their corporate sales channels and shipping was free.

I'm not too worried about cost for the headset, but shipping was way too much with comtrex. How did you "go through" corporate channels and get free shipping? I'm getting the feeling that I may have to purchase the headset and a PTT button, and then make a custom unit myself. That's why I'm leaning toward Tactical Command, as by the sound of it, they'll make a headset custom to my specs... also not cheap though. But any good headset is going to be upwards of $300-$500 easily.

Firemachine - it use a single pin connector - not sure what size though...

I bought mine from radioworld, but it's a ham radio. Not a typical 462-470 Mhz transciever.

When I emailed them for a quote, I used my work email address, which included my work signature. They immediately routed it to corporate accounts due to the nature of my work signature and company.

EDIT - FYI, they also provided me with a quote for the Comtac package, including the headset, chest PTT, Y cable and flexi-boom mic. The package price was significantly less than the total I paid for the parts independantly.

I believe it was about $650 for the package. If you want to, I might be willing to broker another order through them providing I receive payment up front.

I've been looking at Iasus throat mics, and they seem fairly decent from the reviews I've read, as well as inexpensive.

Iasus NT2

I was wondering if anyone has any experience with these mics? Are they decent? I am curious because I am seriously considering purchasing them.

NT2, fuckin garbage. Extremely brittle plug, the design of it is retarded, catches on everything, sticks out at an odd angle (doesnt sit in a radio pouch worth shit), it broke within 2 days of purchasing it. (It snapped off in my radio when I plugged it in.)

They came out with a new ptt button system, still is garbage, will NEVER buy IASUS again.

This "Sunfire" throat mic I had before, much better.

For "professional" equipment, they sure engineer it like friggin monkeys.

Well, I talked to a chap at TCI, and he says he can make something up for a Yaesu radio, so that's the route I'm going to go. Like Batman stated, not very cheap at $400, but I'm sure it's good stuff, and I'm sick of shitty comms! Hell, the radio wasn't cheap either, and now I have two...

They're nothing more then over-marketed re-branding of the chinese ones like I get. A hundred bucks? No, more like twenty. Unless you're paying for jap parts (about 20% of the cost), most of the money you're paying for is either:

A) service
or
B) marketing

I dunno about you guys, but I'd rather take A.

Well, bit the bullet and ordered one from TCI for $450. I'll post on how it works after the milsim in Kelowna on May 6th. But my thoughts are it's got to be good for $450!

It's definitaly going to be a nice step up from my shitty-ass FRS kit! Although this endeavor turned out to be quite expensive in the long-run.
