New to airsoft. Is my gun upgraded wisely?

Hello everybody. I am new to airsoft and have been doing alot of research about upgrades since the purchase of my first AEG. My question(s) is, Has my gun been upgraded wisely? Should it be reliable for the long haul? Do the specs match up with the listed upgrades (I bought the gun pre-upgraded).

Here are the specs

TM MP5 A4

Internally it has Systema torque gears (?) & an M130 Systema spring installed in addition to an M-4 extended barrell.

I am told that it is shooting around 380-400 fps.

Does this sound accurate & is the spring rate ok or should I lower it.

I know, I am green as can be. Given time I will learn & help to steer newbs in the right direction as I am hoping that you all can do for me. Thanks.

Doesn't sound right if you ask me. According to a Spring Chart made by Illusion SystemA M130 spring should produce way over 450fps. He didn't even go that far up. If it does have an M130 spring in it than your gun is hot and if I were you I'd really think about lowering FPS on it, espesially if you are new to airsoft.

Also, if gears, spring and barrel are the only parts upgraded in your gun it will break really fast with that kind of spring.
Read this thread, a lot of usefull info about upgrades can be found there.

Have you considered just playing with the stock aeg for a while? Why the big hurry to upgrade?

Yes, that is understandable. But that was his choice to buy that...

I really suggest downgrading to about a 110 and putting the stock gears back in. The stock gears for ROF reasons.

Does the gun have anything in the uppergearbox? Or is it just the bushings, gears and spring? (barrel makes no difference in this)

I highly suggest going to a 100 or 110m spring. I ran a 120 preupgrade and... ouch, that would not be good for a beginner. I sold the gun and went stock.

You will also notice the ROF is significantly decreased and if you are actually using a 130m and the mech doesn't have any problems with it now, then it should be hitting well over 400fps.

He said nothing about bushings, definatly need those or else you will burn up the nylon ones, and end up stripping the gears. Possibly FUBAR the whole mechbox

It just WOULDN'T still be working without them, the mech would be screwed.

Assuming that the gun has been shot or the upgrader knew something, he has metal bushings.

Edit - Whooo! 500th post! Kiss my BBs! (wear a mouth guard)

anyone who spends that cash on torque gears would have tossed in bushings also.
sell the gears, the torque ups tend to be very loud.

An M130 is the kind of spring that has the ability to seriously injure people at close range.....knocked-out teeth and broken fingers. You sure you (and more likely, your friends, who will be on the recieving end) want to play with something like that? A number of saner suggestions are listed above.

You will also want to make sure that you've matched the cylinder to your new barrel. Get an M4A1 cylinder for an M4A1 barrel, and get rid of the MP5 one.

Thanks for the feedback guys. From what reading I have done I thought the 130 seemed to be too high both from a safety point of view as well as a reliability concern. I got a good deal on the gun & thought that 400 fps was around the optimum range (considering that it is often the max set for playing fields). It definately shoots HARD & is alot of fun to shoot when not being shot at others (haven't tried that yet & from what you guys are saying, that's a good thing!).

My last question is this: If my friends and I are wearing proper protection, including mouth protection is this still too much? A bunch of us are just getting into the sport & the one main concern was that you wouldn't be able to feel it when you got hit like you can in paintball. They read a bunch about the honor system & were not initially interested because we couldn't inflict PAIN on one another.
I want to have fun but I sure don't want to be hurting anybody.

As far as the gun I was told that it had been fully upgraded followed by the information I had given above, so I am guessing that fully upgraded means everything. I am going to attempt to contact him shortly to see what other info I can get out of him regarding the gun.

Just get a 100 or 110 and wear less. You don't need to wear a parka then.

If you run a 130 or 120, there will be a few - or alot of bleeders, you CERTAINLY don't need that and that CERTAINLY will decrease the life of your gun.

Take out the torque up gears, sell them, sell the 130 spring, and put in some regular gears and a 110m spring. That should get you hitting around 350-370fps which is definately enough.

Personally, I would actually go with a 100m spring, which is 320-350. Just for ROF and durability reasons.

I wouldn't use Marui stock gears with an upgraded spring. I think you mean "regular pitch" there Kid. You can get a reinforced gear set from Systema and put in a m120 or sp110 to give you FPS in the 360 to 390 area depending on spring.

As far as "protection" goes, you can't cover your whole body all the time and luck will give someone a good stinger with a hot gun. 400 FPS + CQB = blood and pain. But what's a liitle blood amongst friends?

trust me, you'll feel 400fps so long as your not wearing a shatload of gear.
I know when my 400fps gun hits someone

Is it possible that the person who sold it to you mistook 'M130' as being the systema version of a 130% spring? It would certainly make more sense, considering he claimed it should be shooting at around 350.

I attempted to contact him this morning but I haven't heard back from him yet. How can I chrono the gun myself to resolve some of the confusion? Like I said, it shoots quite hard, but then again I have nothing to compare it to. Also, will it actually be worth it monetarily to sell the used systema torque gears & buy new stock ones? Maybe I would be better off selling the whole gun?
