Sparks on AEG motor - is it avoidable?
I really don't know what's wrong with my aeg but i've already burned two motors because of sparks. I thought it's just a bad setup.. but even i take it off from the gearbox, it would still spark. I was only able to fire half a bag of bbs before the brushes ran out. Replaced them with new ones and it still wont last long. And this is a bnew motor i bought last month.
What are your thoughts? The first motor was TM EG1000 The second one was TU - Red motor (hi-tourqe china brand). I checked both motors, it got dings and burns at the commutator. Am i doing something wrong? Was it because i didn't do breaking-in the motors on a distilled water?

Sparking on motors is normal. Depending on what motor I suppose. Active breaking(MOSFET) Lonex motors will be a flare compared to say, a passive breaking TM motor.

They spark, fact of life for a DC motor
They shouldn't be brush munching though, and especially a marui motor.... I'm very suspicious of your build |

I'm using 1800mah 3s (11.1v) lipo.. Do you think it's too much for a motor?

Do you have any form of MOSFET in the gun? What else did you do to the electrical system?

Judging by your signature you seem to be a FPS junkie, your brushes could burn out due to inefficient gearsets, or your motor is from a bad batch

Too high current will make the brushes crack and snap.
The motor still works since they are spring-loaded and wear down into shape again. So I would go with the too much load too. 11.1v, if you are running a highspeed gearset or even a standard one with M120 spring, it can cause issues. Bad shimming, or if your mechbox uses bearings, a broken bearing will put a LOT of extra load on the motor, and make the current up to 3 times what it should be. Active braking MOSFET also wear down the brushes really fast, because the torque is reversed, and the brushes have to "reshape" every shot. As for the water running (does not have to be distilled, in fact, it's better to put a little friction alcool, as pure water is VERY oxidizing), it's really not needed. For a RC car that empties a 5000mAh pack in under 7 minutes, it is important. For an AEG that uses a 1200mAh pack in a whole day, not so much. |

Thanks for the great inputs.
Im using ultra torque up gearsets w/ Sp150 Ever since i've upgraded to 500fps setup, a lot of headache comes out. Im also using metal bushings.. and my shimming is very good.

a mosfet IS a relay
whether its a simple mosfet or programmable doesn't really matter in this case 2S lipo's are plug and play, 3S requires a mosfet or you risk melting the trigger Lonex motors are known to occasionally have out of round comm's which would cause brush munching. Active braking will cause more sparking and heat than not. You're effectively getting the motor to stop by shorting it. marui motors though are typically well built. And if you're using ultra torque gears, you shouldn't be having that issue.... Sparking is normal, but eating brushes fast is not. They should last you at least 2 years without a problem. If you're sure the mechbox side of things is good, then I'd recommend using a tienly motor Last edited by ThunderCactus; May 2nd, 2014 at 17:15.. |

I'm not a gun Doc but the scale of reference needs to be clear.
Location Philippines most players I have talked to that play in the Philippines use hi FPS AEG's so there's a lot more stress on all parts. "normal wear and tear" references in North America may not be the same in this case. |

On a second thought, i guess the TU motor is prone to breakage. My tm eg1000 lasted a year. But i have to replace the brush almost every game i played it.
The TU motor burned the commutator and no way to rebuild it. Can anyone give reviews on JG motor and matrix magnun motor?
