Silicone Lubricant Spray Question

Hello all, I'm pretty new to airsoft and The other day I stumbled across: http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/brows....jsp?locale=en At my local Canadian Tire.

Now seeing how this stuff seems very similar to the silicone oil lubricant spray I bought from a reputable ASC retailer. And it claims to be "Safe for use on metal, rubber, vinyl, wood, etc" and that it "Lubricates doors, locks, hinges, belts windows, latches, zippers, switches, fishing equipment, tools, chains belts, sports equipment, lawn equipment, valves, linkages, pulleys, fans and more" I figure it should be safe for my guns and shouldn't eat away at anything.

I was wondering if anyone knows whether I can use or should stay away from this stuff. I know to always use quality product when maintaining my guns(an ounce of prevention's worth a pound of cure).

Also one last thing. This stuff would be not be used with my propane adapter(I have the non spray %100 pure silicone for that) just for lubricating my pistol mostly and doing maintenance on my aeg.

You pretty much do not need silicone spray on an AEG ever unless you are doing specialized cleaning. For example, to clean out some bearings which had been exposed to a ton of dirt, I soaked them in a shallow bath of silicone spray and shook vigorously. For lubrication though, don't use silicone spray.

For some insane reason, many AEG manuals have diagrams of spraying silicone into your hopup. This is not useful at all because it lubricates the surface of your bucking, ensuring that your accuracy will suck. There are better ways of cleaning your hopup and bucking chamber *without* spraying them down with silicone.

Some people will counter this by saying that it's okay to spray your hopup with silicone as long as you fire a few hundred BBs through it afterwards, but that's just a waste of BBs since you've just sprayed silicone into your chamber only to try to madly remove it.

Keep the spray away from your AEG. Just get a tube of Superlube and you're good to go for pretty much everything.

A tube like this will last you almost forever:

Thanks. I'll definitely pick some of that up.

I'd read that grease was better anyway since you rarely have to re-apply it.

Hell, better price too. ^_^

the purpose of spraying oil into hop up chamber is not for cleanning, it's to prevent the hop up rubber from dry out and lose of elasticity , so it will last longer.

I'll certainly spary oil into the chamber if I am going to store my gun in my locker for next season, no matter AEG or GBBR.

@GenocidePuppy

the oil from you link is good, I've been using them for my gun since 2009 and so far my tm g17 mags still hold gas very well, they are safe to use. however, this oil is very light, they won't last on any moving parts.

Thanks guys.

I used the spray that I have on my AEG hopup only when I first got it. I was told by one of my experienced airsoft friends it's a good idea to give the barrel a cleaning and give the hopup a tiny tiny little spray. And I'd only need to spray to hopup again if I was storing the gun for a long while.

I still use the spray to clean the barrel occasionally, just a tiny spray on the little cloth.

What I was mainly wondering about was lubrication for my GBBP.

It's good to know that the stuff in my link wouldn't be detrimental to my gun, however not as beneficial, and cost effective as the grease.(I wonder If that's the same grease my friend uses on his GBBR, I'll have to ask him.)

Either way. I appreciate all the advice. Just one more question:

When using the grease on my GBBP how often should I clean it off and re-apply? Or do I just use judgement with how dirty it looks?...I guess that was two questions

personally, i never use silicone spray. it's very light and tends to be very messy. It is useful in a sense that it is very light and gets into the little nooks and crannies very easily without having to disassemble the gun. but if you're taking the gun down and completely dismatling it, put some grease while you're at it. It will last you a while before you're next tune up.

i use a small bottle of grease and it lasted me about two years. you need only apply a very minute amount to get the gun working flawlessly. it is also recommended that you use grease on metal components. Silicone is not meant for metal parts. Grease is as 99% of the machinists will tell you.

Only clean the gun when you need to. i find that most problems occur when the gun is being taken apart on a constant basis. People to wear screw post down, gears don't lnk properly, blow back units begin to come loose (on pistols anyways) and all the sort stuff. Clean if you feel that gun is dirty and feel a drop in performance. "if it aint broke, dont fix it type deal.

The oil is usually safe in the aerosol cans.

The propellant is not.

If I recall correctly, the 3 in 1 stuff at CT isn't 100% silicone. You want 100% silicone. Look for the food safe stuff.

The 100% silicone spray is good for maintaining your gun. I remember ShaDo lightly spraying his guns down post game to keep everything rust free.

Ordered a tube of the Super Lube Grease. Hope it doesn't take too long to ship.
And Yeah, "If it ain't broke don't fix it" has always been one of my favourite philosophies.

Thanks everyone, all the knowledge and opinions have been very helpful.

Just a heads up for future buyers, super lube is typically stocked at Home Hardware stores so check your local one to save on shipping costs.
