AoE and Mfgs
Aye up me Ducks;
Just a question for my peers: If AoE correction is so very important why don’t the OEMs do it? Most of them now supply a second tooth removed piston. How much more would it add to cost to add a spacer to correct it? Cheers

You can ask the same question about why most of the manufacturers don't properly shim their gears. Time=money and due to the loose tolerances of most airsoft parts, it'd would take to long for them to carefully shim, correct AOE, grease, check compression, adjust motor height, etc. since every airsoft gun is made slightly differently. Short answer is they don't care enough to take such measures, as much as I wish that every stock aeg I open up come perfectly shimmed and greased.

In a "factory" mechbox...tolerances should be kept in close enough check that AOE should not vary so much that "fine-tuning" AOE with shims should be necessary.
If it is, then there's base design issues with the piston body/piston head/cylinder head dimensions...and that should be addressed. Removing the 2nd tooth doesn't actually affect AOE directly...it simply serves to hedge bets for various ROF timings. Why isn't the factory checking these things on OEM boxes? Because someone's either dropped the ball or passed the buck already. Which OEM boxes are you seeing this in? |

M102404;
I can see by your reply you are thinking in the same direction I was when I posted. If in this discussion we could set aside the idea of an individual enthusiast trying to get the last degree of performance and longevities out of their AEGs and look at it from the “best practice of an AEG shop." Question 1. Should a shop open new off the truck AEGs and correct AoE? Question 2. Should a shop upon opening an AEG for repairs that require a new piston be overly concerned with AoE if they are replacing with an OEM piston? Question 3. Should a shop upon opening an AEG for repairs that requires a new piston check AoE if they are replacing with an aftermarket piston? Question 4. Should the whole idea of AoE be relegated to the idea of custom work performed by AEG shops?

Q1. If that's a service they want to provide. If they weigh the perceived benefit vs. the potential costs (time/$) and deem it worthwhile. Q2/3. I think that depends on the shop doing the work. If they value ensuring that AOE is correct when changing parts or working on AEGs...then I would think so. Q4. Anytime you're in an AEG it's custom work. |

Also what about warranty? By opening the gearbox you've voided the warranty from the manufacturer (at least you have a warranty in the US, cause we in Canada don't really get any kind of warranty on our stuff). What are you going to do if the gun is DOA? What happens if 2 weeks down the road the AEG stops working and you have an irate customer on your hands? At the end of the day, just upsell the customer on this stuff if you really want to do it but don't do it for them without asking. I know I get pissy about people building/pre-optimizing/setting up my computers because I have a system of building it cleanly and professionally, and I think that I can do it better than most other people (except some of the guys who do custom work on OCN) which would make anything most shops do a waste of time.

Read the thread about revolutionairsoft. There is a majority of customers who value price over most other things. AoE is not even on the radar.
