We ak 74-u

As a special thank you to myself for being such a great guy, I decided to pick up a new toy.

I am a self avowed WE-tard I have 8 WE GBBR M4, M16, CQBR, L85A2, G-39 but I've been waiting patiently for the AK series

and the wait was worth it.

I won't be posting Pics .. there are pictures available elsewhere, I just don't have time to take them.

OK so here are my impressions.

External:
very well done, good finish, all materials look proper.. you could not tell this gun from a real one even upon picking it up.

The receiver is stamped steel with a black finish, body cover is steel with a black /blue finish , Upper piston block is blackened aluminum ( and looks it from close inspection.. this si the worst looking part)

Folding stock blued / blackened steel and solid as a rock.

The Canadian version come with an extended barrel covered over with a silencer ( necessary to get the FPS up to legal import levels ) the stock part are included in the box.

Internal:

Take down is just like a real one, pop the body cover, remove the return spring and guide. retract the bolt carrier/ piston to the take out indent and remove.. field strip is 20 seconds.

Bolt carrier is cast metal, pot metal I expect. but robust. machined just where it needs to be to run in the receiver rails . Piston is black cast in a piece with the carrier, the piston head is machined bright just like a real one.

The trigger group is a fair replica of an modern AK trigger group and clearly very different that anything else WE has done.. they invested some R & D here as I am certain they intend to produce a lot of variants.

Sights, standard AK74 SU , protected post front adjustable for elevation ( but not windage ) and flip short and long range rearsight no adjustment available I could see ( will look more closely)

magazine, Modern polymer style, weight is about right for a loaded mag, has a bolt stop on empty in that the mag can be set to interrupt the fire cycle on empty. so when the mag goes dry the gun stop firing.

Performance : all I can say is WOW and Meh

Semi auto, the action is crisp , with a solid recoil, snappy , chonied with .20 bastards, the gun shot a consistent 456 fps I am told is shoots about 360 with the short barrel installed.

Crazy range.. I mean crazy.. obviously big improvements to hop up.. I was hitting targets the size of a dinner plate consistently at 200 feet, shooting with .30 bastards, the only other gun that has ever shot like that was my KA FAL or a TM M14.

Auto fire.. sucks the longer barrel slows an already slow rate of fire, a real AK74 SU fires at a cyclic rate of 700 RPM pretty slow,, but I think this thing maybe fires at 550 RPM and it vents gas and stutters a bit ( granted it was cold out.. I will try it indoors friday and see if I can measure the ROF ) NOT AT ALL LIKE THE JOY OF AUTO FIRE WITH THE G-39

It is the predominant complaint regarding this gun.. so I expect a ra-tech fix in short order, I think something as simple as and asymetrical return spring could go a ways to addressing this problem.

It is very cool to see the full cycle of the bolt carrier.. all the way back , the movie guys are going to LOVE this gun.

I ran the gun outdoors in 9 degree weather with propane on the weekend.. it ran "ok" but was not happy in the cold.. I did manage to shoot full mags
but auto fire was just not happening.

Overall I am very happy with the gun.. I can see a few of them in the stable

don't ask how much I paid.. I won't tell you.

they will be available at Toronto Airsoft in about a month I'm told

Your right about WE's intent to produce a lot of variants:

I actually don't mind the tacti-cool PMC style AK above, but I would love to see a Khyber pass AKM.

That PMC AK is making me tingly inside. Money has now been set aside.

Do you have any wobble anywhere ? The GHK AKM I put back together for my retailer some time ago had some in the outer barrel.

Brian, did you notice any easy way to remove the fancy mag well plate?

Once I get mine I would be looking to put some wood on it and try to make it as old school as possible.

P.S. Oh yea, at Deadfall even my Glock was leaving clouds of gas on semi.

The only AK I'll ever touch is a gas one from WE. Can't wait!

What's with the plate next to the magwell in the pics? To help change mags when a new one is going in?

it's a half mag well .. facilitates faster mag changes by guiding in the mag.. you only need to be concerned about front back alignment ..

easily removed if you don't like the look
