Newbie questions about collecting
Hey everyone,
I'm a super noob when it comes to Airsoft. As in, know very little about it, and don't know anyone who's into it. Right now, I'm actually curious about collecting airsoft guns, moreso than playing any sports associated with it. Partially because I'm something of a weapon aficionado, and partially due to being an independent filmmaker, so it'd be nice to have a small assortment of replica weapons to use on set without having to go through the official (and expensive) channels. I guess I'm wondering if this sort of thing is done, or if most of the Airsoft community here are in it to play competitively. I imagine the major difference in my case would be that I'm looking at buying guns for aesthetic reasons moreso than functionality. I did give the FAQs and stickies a read-through, but I'd be interested to hear from anyone who might already be doing something similar. Finding out your experiences in doing such, or if this is even a good idea. Cheers. |

Yup, there's a few guys here and there that just collect instead of play.
Or some do both really.

There's several film/movie related people already on the board...perhaps a few not so active any more.
There are others who have played...but more so just fiddle with neat stuff now. There are others who actively play...and buy up just about one of everything under the sun just to check 'em out. So...yup, just about all types. **Before your next question is, "So where do I get stuff"...just a heads up that no-one on the forum will assist until you get Age Verified (against forum rules). And...although you're not interested in playing...you may want to check out TTAC3/FACT and speak with Brian M. You may find a kindred spirit if you're a weapon aficionado *cough, cough*...just maybe...*cough, cough* |

Thanks for the quick replies!
Yeah, I saw that bit in the age verification thread. I'll be sure to look into getting that done asap. |

I'm going to say it's probably a better idea to get a weapons/propmaster on set just because then you're not as responsible for that stuff (passing the buck for the win).
That said, I do understand as an independent/student filmmaker you're working with tight budgets and all that so maybe find someone who's willing to help out film students for a small gratuity. As far as collecting goes. Technically I'm a collector/chairsofter at the moment because of school stuff and not being in Canada so I have to hire out gear when I want to play. There are other collectors, collector/players, or just players. Then there's re-enactors, LEO/Mil training (don't think that happens very often though since they have MILES and Simunition but I think some US Army/Marine companies/battalions have tried out airsoft for training). We're actually quite a varied bunch from white collar Engineers and Lawyers, to blue collar Carpenters and Machinists and all that. PS: "DEWAT" ("DEactivated WAr Trophies") guns may sometimes be cheaper than their airsoft equivalents, so if you want a No.4 Lee Enfield or something it's probably more cost effective to buy a DEWAT than modding an airsoft gun to a No.4. But then again there are probably some guns that are cheaper airsoft wise than their deactivated equivalents.

I collect too. The first item in the collection is a 2010 PTW M4A1. I have a Luger on the way and waiting for the Inokatsu 1911 to come out this summer.
OP - do you a list of weapons you are collecting or doing this as you go?

Let's put it this way, KJW 10/22 costs more than the real Ruger 10/22, so yeah, even a real gun might be cheaper than the airsoft version.

If he's using it for film purposes though airsoft would likely be the better option, Juke.

Not quite. You can always fake a gunshot by jerking your hand back and forth while holding it (that came out wrong) and adding in effects later.

Yea but doing that with a REAL firearm (even unloaded) is just asking for a host of problems.
