I prefer to use my guns ........ that puts enough wear on them, besides, a quick look at a gun will tell people whether you did it on purpose or by using it. Intentional damage is lame and for wanabes (except AKs .... the only way to get realistic ammounts of damage to some of them is by intentionally doing it ..... let's face it, we don't have decades to waste on one gun :P)

For example, there should be wear on the foregrip and pistol grip, the buttstock shouldn't look scratched as if you've run steel wool on it, it should be a worn smooth look, the mag just doesn't look properly worn and the front sights should be dinged up

No they look stupid... and people that do it always put the damage exactly where it should not be... so that in stead of used it just looks scratched up

I don't like scratches on my gun, but if it does gets scratched up on the field unintentionally, then so be it. Overly scratched guns look trashy to me. The occasional knick and scratch makes it look a little used, yet still good looking.

I am not familiar with airsoft.

What my question is, does the element of surprise work on a typical airsoft match?

I tried the Intentional scratch look when i first got my 416..... I the VERY quickly repainted it and let it wear on it's own over time, looks amazing and used now and 10000X better than when i did it all with steel wool.

I'm pretty satisfied with the natural wear on my rifle's paint.. Right where I index above the trigger guard..

I like my guns to look good. They age naturally and develop their wear with use. I see no point in scratching the shit out of a gun intentionally. I want wear one my guns, not scratches. There's a big difference and you can immediately tell which is which.

I prefer the scratchs natural.
Sometime, artificially allowing the paint to wear is acceptable.

I think you misunderstood lol.

I ment it shows experience on the gun, meaning its not "out of the box" "greenhorn" etc etc.

I wasnt referring to the player.
