1/2 inch floor mats and double them up in the front / back.

I bought some Dollar Store EVA foam play mats a($3.50 for a pack of four) and they work fine - each foam mat is just the right size to trace a large size SAPI standard plate on it with a little to spare.. Don't need to wrap them in tape, hold their shape, not too heavy. If I want to go the full weight path in future I'll look for something else.
