I'm no marketing expert but if they stayed on message with 'one pattern - all environments, the only gear you will need' they could probably still smoke the competition. All this jive talk about ATACS but where is it exactly? Some airsofters and paintballers? Compare that to the huge mil/le/gov/foreign contracts for multicam and it's a joke.

In marketing, this is their "unique selling point" (USP), and they should keep enhancing such good market positioning. If they really develop the patterns as said, they would become no difference to their competitors.

they don't have a choice, they have been selected as the camo pattern for the US army, and SF.. terrain specific patterns were stipulated in the requirements.

1 universal pattern for general issue- with a multi terrain capability, plus a suite of environment specific versions for theater specific issue ( to be used mostly by the SF )

"marketing" is not really coming into this decision.

AFAIK, the Army wanted a transitional pattern(for general issue) as well as a Woodland and Arid variant of the pattern for Operations(where the transitional pattern isn't ideal). I believe they wanted another variant of the pattern for their LBE(that would work with the Transitional, Woodland, and Arid patterns).

also.. if you look at scale and type of deployments needing terrain specific kit, it's going to be mostly SF that ends up prancing around in "alpine" multicam.

If the US Army deploys to a area where a arid or woodland pattern would be better than the transitional pattern, they would issue the appropriate uniform; at least that is their plan. I am only referring/talking about what has been announced by the US Army for their UCP replacement.

Is the US Army purchasing/wanting a "alpine" Multicam? Or did you just randomly choose that for your example?

MultiCam Alpine: A pattern intended for snow-covered areas – ideally suited for over-garments and gear covers when/where snow cover is present.

MultiCam Black: While not a geographically-based pattern, MultiCam Black gives law enforcement groups a sharp and authoritative presence suited to domestic L.E. operations where projecting a strong and distinct image is a critical concern.
