Then they need to learn how to use them lol
We've only got 2 or 3 guys in Mb that do all the radio programming. Doesn't take long to set up a channel when you know what you're doing.
unlock
set frequency
lock
done

What we should do, is set up prairie standard channels for ops so everyone's radio in western canada is programmed the same lol

Also you dont NEED the laptop to program you can do it right on the radio keypad. So long as you A. Have the freq list or B. One person has theirs alrdy programmed for the channel you can just look at the freq and enter it. Or (as far as i know) just plug one radio to the other and clone the program. But in an ideal world folks would pre program their radios. (at least with the low channels (1-10 or whatever) then they just gotta twist the knob and away they go. Ill be doing all of em (1-22 or whatever the heck the frs/gmrs ones are)

The Puxing 777 that Hectic used recently was programmed in about 5-10 minutes while I was at work as I had Frank ship it to me at work.

I have yet to have to reprogram it.

What some people are likely having issues with is the groups who insist on using sub tones. I refuse to program any of my radios with sub tones as the permutations are extensive and you are likely to run out of channel memory. Forget attempting to get to those channels quickly.

The Wouxun I have came with the programming cable so whenever I need to refresh my base programming, I just fire up the software but again, have yet to go in and do other than when I first got it or when I wanted to store a couple other NOAA channels and didn't want to bother with going through with the on board programming.

the 777 or 888

For the pric eI wouldnt worry about saving 30 bucks and than fairly quickly buying something bigger, plus they are fairly easy to resell with little loss.

As for the Radio police.
You have no worrie's in the wood's unless you happen to overheard a police search on the channel than stay off lol.

The issue come's more to people near an airport who like to fuck around. usually these are the same idiot's with the high powered lasers.

Many large airports can tell where your transmitting from if you decide to be a ***** and screw with them.

Although you can listen in on the VUHF and UHF frequencies if that's your thing. just don't transmit.

VHF and UHF in the city is mostly taxi's and drive thrus anyway, some farmers in the country
The frequencies that cause the police to chase you down are usually out of normal range, like SHF and aircraft VHF
airband, far as i know, is 108-137MHz
Typical commercial radios in VHF are 136-174MHz

Apparently the RCMP uses 150-160 VHF in certain areas though

It takes less than 10 mins to program a 777/888
Once its programmed, switching channels takes the twist of one knob. Usually faster then blister pack radios.

A fixed, usually not well tuned antenna @ 0.5w vs the ability to buy a proper antenna and transmit at 4W UHF is also another great thing for non blister pack radios.

Blister pack radios are bad and should feel bad.

I never have, I got my 888 a couple years ago from Techseller.

My team mates orders 6 or 8 radios from them in the last 2 months though. No problems.

Anything that you do not have permission to transmit on is a very serious offence, does not matter what band its in. The bands are usually pretty full of background traffic that you cant pickup with your radio, but if you transmit on them it will disturb the other users.

Here is a handy link with an easy to reference list of the channels and subs

Don't bother programming subs. They provide 0 security and will just cause people to talk over each other with enough traffic on the same main ch.

Also, when trying to use subs with blister pack radios, the squelch freqs are different/sub ch depending on the vendors.

Says the guy that clearly has never used that to his advantage at an op!
Alpha had no crypto at claybank, so what I did was put a command channel and the chatty squads from separate platoons on channel 2, on different subs.
So if anyone wants to scan the command channel they just get a lot of incoherent nonsense unless they have the right subs.
And it actually worked perfectly on our end, nobody talked over anyone else.
Downside is it was useless because bravo's radios went down so fast they made it about 5 minutes into game before re-tasking their radio snoopers to command comms lol

Random note - Use of crypto on frs/gmrs is against the law.

I have used it...
Radio telephony is my job, I know how it works and how to implement it.
This is why it does not work.

Scenario:
-You are allotted FRS Ch 2.
-You want to have 3 nets
- Sect 1
- Sect 2
- Sect 3

FRS - 2 - Sub 1 = Sect 1
FRS - 2 - Sub 2 = Sect 2
FRS - 2 - Sub 3 = Sect 3

Radios will be programmed as such.

Sect 1 = 462.5875 SQ = 67Hz
Sect 2 = 462.5875 SQ = 71.9Hz
Sect 3 = 462.5875 SQ = 74.4Hz

-----
- A quick lesson on Squelch -
Without squelch, you would constantly hear noise. Squelch turns off your receive circuit until it is triggered either by a specific signal, or a signal with X strength. At this point, it opens up your receive circuit until the tone/signal stops.

While the squelch is open, you can hear EVERYTHING on the frequency you are tuned into.
-----

A member of sect 1 keys up to talk. All member of sect ones radios are activated and all sect 1 members can hear. Sect 2 and 3 do not hear this traffic.

Because members of Sect 2 and 3 do not hear sect 1 traffic, they do not know that there is traffic being passed. Therefor they do not know that the net is in use and not to key up.

A member of sect 2 keys up. All Sect 2 radios are activated.
A member of sect 3 keys up. All sect 3 radios are activated.
All members of sect 2 and 3 can now hear all traffic - This is a collision - bad.

A member of sect 1, 2 and 3 all end up keying up during the same transmission.
More collisions, more bad.

Because the transmitting stations can't hear the net, they do not know that they are talking at the same time as others. 2 people attempting to talk on the net at the same time is incoherent.

Then it's amazing we didn't have a single radio problem in 4 hours of constant radio communication lol
