Forums are very interesting places and you find out a lot of stuff. Thanks for the info guys.
Now to redefine my question and get some good clear answers gents: I have $200ish to spent on a springer rifle which I will use for marksmen duty. I will likely upgrade over time. What would you buy and what would be the first thing you upgrade? Also as a side note what weight of BB do you use? I know the heavier the better but do you use .5g? |

Trust me. You feel it. You will flinch from the sting. Even from 200ft. Quote:
I dont tell Marksmen to sink 2000$ into a rifle. I assume people mean exactly what they say, and when they stated they wanted to play a Sniper and upgrade a "Sniper Rifle", I assume exactly that and tell them the costs required to properly accomplish that task. Hurley 200$ isnt even enough to get a crappy AEG. Prepare to be blowing around 400-500 for even the chinsiest clone "Marksman" gun. Even Stock TM M14's go for about 700-800.

i think 200 is to low. my friend bought the vsr 10 from buyairsoft for sometihng like 220? not sure. for just the marksmen role and for fun it should be alright, but dont expect to hit anything. im not saying its a great gun but i would upgrade it with a much better barrel, like a 6.03, upgrade the spring and use heavy bbs, atleast .28's.
like i said dont expect much, but for under 400 and looking for fun here and there i think it will be alright. |

in honesty you will find it very hard in terms of quality and fieldability in a $200 springer and we are talking about CDN here not USD the only thing I can see in that range are those Basspro springers you would be a lot happier with just a simple AEG if you play a DMR role |

buyairsoft has them for 199.99 right now. it says 475fps but that is incorrect, that might be with .12's but im not sure. but like i said i would upgrade the barrel and spring cause stock that that, you wont be able to hit much.

You won't be able to get anything that would even be considered passable for $200. There is no way that I'd let you be a marksman, on my fireteam, with a $200 rifle. |

Seriously I would say prepare to put at least around $500 minimum for SDM role and some experience too.

I've been playing with an MP5 for the last couple of years, and recently wanted to move up to a Designated Markman role. I just laid out $650 on a use TM M14, I wouldn't have expected to pay less. But I am no were thinking that I could play a "Sniper" role with that weapon. Terminology is everything in this situation.
A $200 gun while fun to play with will not allow you to do a sniper role correctly, not even a designated markman. More like cannon fodder! If that is all you can afford to get started then go for it, and be happy, but don't expect much from the gun and you will be buying another one when, not if, it breaks.

Yah got it from a friend! LOL
That was my point, I bought the weapon for a specific role. If you want to go with a specific role you will need to pay the right amount for a quality weapon. Now I'm not against someone buying a low price weapon to get started. I've seen lots of people buy the Kraken and have a great time. But when you get serious you will want to spend more. You don't have to (at least that's what I keep telling my wife, lol) but you will want to get something better. My thoughts on price points are: $0-$200 - canon fodder $200 - $500 - grunt/assault team $500 - $1000 - marksman $1000 - $1500 - entry level sniping platform $1500 - up - sniper These are my ballpark prices for the different roles. Helps me decide how much I need to have on hand!!

$1500 - up
Means more than $1500 with no top out. It's like same as saying $1500 and up! :banghead: If your gun is $2000 it falls in that area, if its $4000 it falls in there. Those were my ballparks and since I'll never pay more than $1500 for a gun, everything in MY list over $1500 is one bucket! :salute: its mine.. mine ... mine, and you can't have it! (stomps foot)

FYI I started with a stock TM VSR G-spec
I've put less than $800 into it, so I'm right at the $1100 mark in total cost. And it shoots freakin FANTASTIC. I don't know where you guys are getting this $1500 mark from, even an AEG sniper platform is only around $1100 without external upgrades, and IN Canada no less... |

I've put now about $1600 into mine including cost of gun and externals, which at the time I got a super deal on the stock vsr off a friend who moved to aeg's. So I've put about $1250 in upgrades and my vsr-10 is a beast. |
