Why would I close it and try to test fire it when the gears are binding? Sounds kind of counter productive to me?

Wait a second..
You haven't closed the gearbox yet? ... Anyway, Buy modify stuff. |

the shimming gearbox picture only works with good mechbox.
Overshimming your gearbox will cause excessive friction and drag on your motor and battery, if excessive shimming is need you may have a deformed gearbox shell. I vote for mechbox. Things that Arnies article doesnt say: 1) does not give talent to people how to shim 2) have to shim gears one by one and not try to fit them all at same time. 3) have to close your mechbox with screws everytime you put a gear in it. 4) it is easier starting with spur gear shimming because it is set at the bottom of the shell. 5) If you buy a 10$ mechbox, throw it in garbagge NOW! 6) Use well known brands such as systema, guarder, prometheus, modify. These parts are well made and quality control is better than chinese made. I recommend using this way. This is my how to safely shim a custom gearbox (there are many other ways) 1- Empty your mechbox (except selector plate, cut off lever, wiring, switch and bushings) Just make sure bushings are fully snap at right place. 2- Start putting spur gear with regular shimming (0.3 under, 0.8 on top) 3- Close your mechbox with screws tighten (see if it turns easily, try to move it on the side to verify if it's undershimmed) try to move it on the side to verify if it's undershimmed. Note to myself: i may have to put more shims, if so, i have to split the amout added between each side. Once Spur gear goes freely but not bouncing (lack of shimming) Go to number 4. Another note to myself : everytime i add, change, remove a shim, i have to redo number 3 from beginning. 4- Open your mechbox, put the sector gear ( 0,7 under, 0,5 on top). 5- Close your mechbox with screws tighten (see if ti turns easily try to move it on the side to verify if it's undershimmed OR if it is too much shimmed on one side or both.) If sector gear runs freely and not bouncing, go to 6, if needs shims, redo number 5 from beginning. Note to myself : Be careful on overshimmed side, once you close the mechbox with screws, it wont turn properly, so i have to look inside the mechbox to see which side is too much shimmed. If it is undershimmed, i'll push on the axle of the gear (both way) to see which side is undershimmed. Everytime i add, change, remove a shim, i have to redo number 5 from beginning. 6- Open your mechbox, put the bevel gear ( 0,4 under, 0,3 on top). 7- Close your mechbox with screws tighten (see if ti turns easily try to move it on the side to verify if it's undershimmed OR if it is too much shimmed on one side or both.) If sector gear runs freely and not bouncing, go to 8, if needs shims, redo number 7 from beginning. Note to myself : Be careful on overshimmed side, once you close the mechbox with screws, it wont turn properly, so i have to look inside the mechbox to see which side is too much shimmed. If it is undershimmed, i'll push on the axle of the gear (both way) to see which side is undershimmed. Everytime i add, change, remove a shim, i have to redo number 7 from beginning. 8- Keep mechbox closed, put it in lower receiver, grip, motor etc... (if it is a v2) or assemble the motor under the mechbox (if it is a v3). Test fire without Cylinder, spring, etc.. Take time to ajust motor depth. If anyting weird occurs, it will be the time. 9- Finish assembly of your mechbox. Remember that the sector gear button (where the tappet plate engage) has to be at 2:00 or just before sector gear engage the piston. If it wont turn, it wont be gears problems, you may check battery.
