I'm worried that a mesh too strong will shatter the bbs and send shards through the mask. but a lighter mesh will break with too much wear. Sadly i don't forsee any future with mesh gogles, well, not homemade ones, lol.

Good try Mason! It was a good idea tough. I would have liked to see if it could have resisted a 450 fps shot from close range from a .43g teflon coated BB. I bet teflon powder would have sprayed the unlucky eyes behind.

I've made mesh inserts for a few years now with zero incidents. I use stainless steel mesh. A grade that yeilds the best visibility while being strong enough. This grade has been tested point blank full auto 420ish fps. Yes, mesh deforms at that point , but is easily fixed by hand. The mesh has enough give to absorb the bb's impact and not fracture them. Steel stores have this stuff in stock, I just cut a copy of the original lens, tabs and all and fit into goggle frame. I still have bolles and PB goggles for when field restrictions apply. The bolles work good, better with rainex (have yet to fog the lens with the stuff, yet) and the thermal PB goggles are equally fog free. Lots of choices.
