My friends and I (who are R/C aeroplane flyers) have discussed the possibility of airsoft UAVs.

We've concluded 2 things: 1) You WILL have some jackass shoot at it, regardless of rules, and
2) cost vs. practicality/usability. Always seems to be weighted too far in the cost side to really be usable.

Is it just me or does this look allot like the Dragonflyer built in Saskatoon?

Only 14,000 for one that has a live video feed and carbon fibre body and blades.

Here is the major problem your going to run into.

Unless the UAV is dead silent, invisible, or so far up it can't be shot down it is useless. When your playing how often do you miss a player wearing terrain appropriate camo hiding? Now imagine you are trying to find them from 50 feet up, on a tiny low res screen with a low res video.

Unless they implement some sort of thermal imagining unit, or motion detection device, or a very very good camera, this will be limited in usefulness (not to mention the price, getting it shot down and other things already mentioned.

Draganflyer also has a cheaper version that comes in around $900.00 (basic version), a friend had it a few years ago. It could fly high enough that I doubt anyone would be able to hit it, also had a high-res camera on it. He had the feed going to a 10" LCD mounted in a Pelican case.
He used it for real-estate promotion, but its still allot of money for a "toy" that will have limited use in most Airsoft games.

a UAV...hmmm been discussed for many years.

If the field was large enough (say Claybank for example)
If you could get it up to a decent altitude
If you could get grayscale thermo on a PTZ
If you could get Transmitters/receivers with enough range
If you could get a forward command post (mobile, say an old cargo van) with the electronics and screens

then it would work

otherwise it is just an RC airplane with madbull on the side of it

can't edit my post...

If I remember correct, Most far distance ever hit by airsoft was 350 ft?

now remember, it don't have gravity fight against it. Not 100% BB decelerate due air drag only, but when shot up. then It will include gravity and Air drag, which I believe will reduce range person can achieve by shoot up.

The parrot uav also follows and responds to the "beacon" the orange and green stripes. Imagine having that printed on top of your hat/helmet, and having it follow you from above, or having the whole team, so you can have it follow whoever. would make for some great videos, and might have a tactical application too.

This sucks.

Get that: http://www.nitroplanes.com/mq9.html with that: http://www.micropilot.com/ (or a similar system) and now I'll accept it if you call that an UAV.
