I went the pyrotechnic route with my design. It utilizes a large firecracker with a friction fired fuse i designed to light it. The fuse is basically a drinking straw with several matches taped to it. The strikers from the matchbox with a metal ring attached to them are held onto the end of the matches with an elastic band. When the ring is pulled, (say by an attached trip wire), the matches on the straw light, igniting the firecracker.

The trap itself was the above with about 300 .2s duct taped around it, in effect being similar to a hand grenade staked to the ground. I got bored and decided to make this thing and test it, The test, basically stand in front of it and pull the trip wire. Results: Noisy, but perfectly safe. i was hit with probably 20 or 30 bbs and was standing about 6-7 feet from it. From the force of the impacts, I believe the bbs were moving at probably 200 to 250 FPS (felt like gettin shot with a cheap springer). The spread covered the room i tested it in which is about 400 square feet. Outdoors this would probably equate to about a 30 foot radius at which the bbs are still moving at a decent pace.

All in all i think it worked pretty good.

I'd go for a small camouflaged sentry gun, they'll never see it coming.

Just another quick thought what about remote controlled mortars. I was thinking this would help out the snipers potentially, cause you could have a bank of like 6 mortars or something you setup 30ish feet away from you. Then set off one at a time to be able to defend your position.

RICKBO, for your design, you could have a high strength wire attached to the object on top of the spring that drops down thru the spring and out the bottom of the device so you could pull down on that and it would reset, this way you wouldent run the risk of having the 45º coupling at the top flying off when you fire. It would also mean you dont have to carry something with you to reset the spring.

I have a bunch of PVC piping in my basement from when I was making potato cannons, I think im going to try this out now.

For the remote detonated claymores, you can buy a couple cheap remote controled cars and canabalize the servos from them to pull a pin, which means each controler detonates 2 mines.
Or if you dont want to carry a bunch of controllers around, you could buy a controler for a remote controlled plane, some can handle up to 8 servoes on one controler.

fishing line rigged to trip a rat trap can be used to trigger anything you want, Caps, grenades, claymores etc.

225 joules would put 400 .2G BBs at 250FPS so with friction and energy loss 300-400 jules would be needed for a decent velocity. so what kind of spring would you want for 300-400 joules of energy output?

Here are some pics of the 203 launcher I am working on.
It should resemble the M79 Sawed-Off.

I will post pics of my traps when I get them more refined.

I'm curious, how did these traps work out?

Sounds interesting... just wondering how effective it would be.

Didn't really have enough time to finish them before the big game,

But a couple people that tested them out seemed extremely impressed and happy with them

I'm working on re-designing them adding a couple features that I feel it needs

I've seen the m203 shell trap in action with a trip wire. They are awsome.

I'd say, if you have the money to buy them, lace a whole field with them!

That is why I am using the relatively inexpensive POM shells.

They are good for a couple reasons, slightly less powerful, light, and cost effective.
