Halloween is coming! Stonewalls Horror movies with a military theme.

Okay. Halloween is just around the corner. No better time of year than to pull out the ol Halloween Horror favourites. I'm going to list prior and up to Halloween personal favourites with a military theme. Here's my current #1 pic.

Dog Soldiers, 2001, British Made.

Did not get wide distribution in North America and actually didn't make it to the theatres, coming from England in DVD. However, the DVD reviews were very good to excellent. Personally, I loved it. The teenagers in the family loved it. Showed it to all their friends who also loved it. Instant cult classic.

Generally, what makes this work is that you don't always see what it is. A "psychological thriller", so to speak. You decide.

Here's what is on the box:

"A band of soldiers (British) is dispatched to war games deep in the woods. When they stumble across a rival team slaughtered in camp, they realize they're not alone. Something deadly is waiting in the darkness: Something not animal and not human. Holed up in an abandoned farmhous4e, the soldiers start a bloody battle against the beasts. Dawn is only a few hours away but they may not live to see it. Dog Soldiers is a terrifying chiller in the tradition of Predator and An American Werewolf in London."

(gee almost sounds like doing the MILSIM with the "Wolfpack" in Bracebridge last weekend.)

Where can you get it? Blockbuster or Jumbo. Usually less than $10. A good buy or rent.

Next two movies: "The Bunker" (WWII), "Dead Birds" (Civil War supernatural).

Recommendations of favourites welcome. Always looking for the one's I missed. Only one criteria, has to have a military connection.

I actually have Dog Soldiers...I found it quite amusing. While it doesn't have the best acting, I thought it was quite interesting and entertaining. The Bunker IIRC was alright.

Dog Soldiers is great for gathering info on Brit Kit from the 90's if you're doing a Brit impression.

The Bunker was really good, too bad I only found it the one time. There was one other, The Trench I think, which was sort of a WW1 version with a few differances. Worth looking up.

I think we should get the Wolfpack boys to put their masks on and do a Halloween game in Bracebridge. Or a Halloween night game at Flag Raiders with all kinds of twists and turns. We could have some fun. I have a fog machine and strobe lights.

We could do our version of "28 days later" ala Flag Raiders. Whadya think, Saturday night Halloween game at Flag Raiders? Huh? Huh?

Not enough room in my backyard. Or house. We live in a shack.

I liked Dog Soldiers too! A couple of others I liked were 'Ravenous', which is set around the Civil War. It's been a while so I can't remember if it was before, during or after. I think it was after, during the Westward expansion.

'Day of the Dead'!!!! A bunch of scientists holed up in an underground government complex researching the zombie plague and what's left of the soldiers "protecting" them start to succumb to the pressure and turn on each other. Classic Romero!

'Red Dawn' It could be classified as a horror movie because it's scary that people were stupid enough to believe that this was a legitimate threat during the Cold War, lol! One thing I never understood was if the Soviets were such a huge menace, how could a bunch of untrained highschool kids from bumpkin-town U.S.A. wage a successfull guerilla campaign against them? Although this movie is good as a classic example of Cold War propaganda, almost as good, as I recall, as 'Ruskies', though it has been a loooong time since I saw that one!

Does anyone notice that most British horror flicks include the Army?

Also, I noticed a movie at Wal-Mart called 'Homecoming'. One of those 'Masters of Horror' collection flicks. Anyone seen it?

I saw it at HMV, it looked like it could be a few laughs, but I once took a chance and bought "Hood of the Living Dead" without seeing it first. I don't take chances anymore. I'll wait for the local rental place to get it.

Yeah Dog Soldiers was pretty good. I watched it up at my cabin last christmas and boy was I scared as hell.

Then one night I walked into the lounge...the other movie was just ending so I put Dog Soldiers in
It sure got alot of the chicks screaming...

My favorite bit from Dog Soldiers . I think it's great.

The bunker was good too, very creepy.

I watched a wee while ago a film set in WW1 called " death watch ". It was...actually VERY good IMO. I'd recommend it for a good watch. ( Even though some sites don't rate it very well....I liked it....so there....)
