Identifying springs by look/feel
So i've got this bag of springs here.... all aftermarket upgrade springs, but my workshop's been pretty disorganized over time and these springs have either never been labelled or lost their labels.
My question is this: is there any way of identifying the strength/rating of these springs ... without installing it in a gun? |

Just taking a guess here, but could you take an identified spring and compare that with the unidentified springs? Hang a small mass off them and see how much the mass displaces or something. Any springs with matching displacements should, in theory, have the same strength.
Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

If you have known springs, you can compare them against an unknown spring by sleeving them over a common shaft.
Get a metal rod that's a bit smaller than the inside diameter of the springs. Put both springs on and compress them against each other. Springs with the same force-displacement profile will be equal lengths throughout the crunch so the intersection between springs will also be the midpoint of the total length.

The safest way is to actually install each in a particular gun, chrony them, and label the results on a small piece of paper you can tape to each spring.
Guesswork in upgrades is never a good thing. |
