Canada: Big in Italy?!!
Just thought I'd share a little something I thought was kinda funny....
Went into one of the local Shops here in Rome and saw that they had those black and light sage flags (IR?) that you see Canadian troops wearing in Afghanistan. Anyway, they had US, Brit, AUS and CAN flag patches, so I figured, being a Canadian, I'd represent and pickup the ol' Maple leaf. Lo and behold it was the last one! I said "thats a bit strange", to which the owner of the shop said "yeah! I ordered 50 or so of each and I've sold out of the Canadian ones and have almost all of the others left!" So I guess there are a bunch of Canadian enthusiasts running around Rome somewhere... guess I'll be keeping an eye out now JB |

Everybody around the world is a big fan of Canada. American travellers sew canadian flags on their backpacks to get more respect.
Just a bit of advice: If you speak english in a foreign country, specify that you are canadian. Because they all think you are american we you speak english without the british accent and then you get the cold shoulder. |

When I was in Germany and Amsterdam I was treated poorly until they found out I was Canadian. All of a sudden I was their best friend. I think it's kind of sad that we need to advertise that we are Canadian to get any respect.

Not to get things completely off topic, but yeah... I've experienced that too. More with the Dutch than Germans though. Some Germans can be snooty, but I think by-and-large, they're mostly just misunderstood by non-germanic folk. As for the Dutch, Amsterdam's been a s**t magnet for sooo long so no big surprise there.... but on top of that I think they're tired of Canadian's (but probably mostly American's) going over there thinking that they owe us something for Liberating Holland.
Once transiting threw Schipol airport, I was going through security and a Canadian Lady was about to miss her flight and said so to the Guard manning the metal detector... the Guard blew up and started beratting the lady saying things like "You canadians think you're so great! You are all the same... you all think we dutch owe some something...blah, blah, blah!" LOL! I think she was having a bad day |
