Lipo cell voltage
I have a 7.4v 1750mah 20c lipo battery and i just checked the voltage. First cell is 2.95 and the second cell is 3.73.
Is this normal? I thought the voltages were suppose to stay within .01v of each other. would this battery be safe to charge? Last edited by andrew5826; July 21st, 2010 at 06:24.. |

You need a LiPo balance charger.

Some lipo balance chargers have a lipo charge mode that does not balance.
Look through your manual and see if there is a balance charge mode, or you may have to balance the cells then charge the pack. My charger book said that a pack should never be allowed to drop below 3.0v per cell, as once they drop in below that the risk of fire is greater when you are recharging them.

There is one thing you can do, but it involves a lot of time and patience.
You can single charge each cell if you can set your charger to 1cell and very low charge current (1/20C). Charge both cells until full (detected by the charger). Then re-check voltages. If the cells are still fucked, don't use it or charge it again. Always stay beside the pack and check for swelling and heat from the battery. If it start to heat up (past 70degF), unplug and put it outside, at least 10' from anything and on a concrete surface (middle of your parking is ok).

Charge it outdoors in a fireproof area (away from house, not inside the garage, well ventilated). Charge it "slowly" (less than 1C....so maybe 1A for your pack)....monitor the voltages of the cells periodically (there's no harm in letting it charge up for 10 min, stopping to check the voltages of the cells and then start the charging again).
If the balancing is working the voltage of the lower of the two cells should rise to equal the higher cell...then both should charge up in synch to 4.2 each. Puffing/swelling, heat, etc...stop and dispose of the pack. If that's not happening...dispose of the pack and try a different battery. Try a buddy's LiPo balancing charger as well...to eliminate that it's not your charger. |
