What's the fps on a Tokyo Marui AK-47?

280-290 fps. Like most TM.

Why are their velocities so low? Also, do people usually put a stronger spring in their TM's?

mm I suggest this be moved to the newbie tank, with another title...
velocities are low because of japanese laws. Yes people do add stronger springs, you'll find lots of info about that on mechbox.com. edit: you don't need a stronger spring to kick ass ingame. you mostly need a hop-up that's properly tuned .

TM is a Japanese manufacturer and they have a 1Joule law in Japan where airsoft guns may not exceed 1 joule of energy at the muzzle.
Some people do, some people don't. It's personal preference. Search around the boards and you'll see lots of ppl who have but also those who preach the awesomeness of stock TM rifles like the M14.

the only thing I did more recently was add a Modify s90 spring but with everything else stock (plastic bushings, plastic spring guide, etc...) , it didn't get up to the advertised 330fps. no biggie though. still a tough little work horse. |

though low velocity, it also maintains and offer almost 0% internal damage , you can upgrade a TM very easily from what i see.

Exactly! Everyone should have at least one stock TM gun. Then you know you have something for the upcoming skirmish. If you upgrade the spring without strengthening the other internals you will shorten the life of your gun. |

The springs settle to around 260-270 don't they?

So having low fps isnt really bad? It's more about the quality of the airsoft?

barrel. Yet the Mp5 is more accurate at 150 feet. The opposite should be true but the Marui quality is unsurpassed. I believe the Marui hop-up is the reason the Mp5 just throws one bb after another in straight trajectory. The Famas while shooting harder and having more "gross" range is not controllable at longer ranges. Plus the TM has 30 or 40 thousand shots through it with no problems(knock wood). I'll be surprised if the ACM Famas gets anywhere near that. |

a very popular trick to increase a bit of FPS is to get out the spring of your barrel and try to pull from both ends as long as possible (the spring.
