None of the payment types are really particularly safe. Any deal made online is going to have risk for one side of the equation or the other, usually the buyer. But that's what the Age Verification and Trader Rating systems are for. If you only buy from Age Verified members and only those with high trader ratings then it's very unlikely you'd get burned. Anyone with a total trader rating in the negative, or even with anywhere close to an even ratio of negatives to positives will basically become a pariah here. You get anything resembling a rep for shady dealings and you're basically done in this sport in Canada. And since you have to meet in person with an Age Verifier and show photo id, there's no way to create another account. We're a tight knit group that's very good at self-policing ourselves.

... Not really. The only thing you have that's a plus for EMT is a "receipt" of sorts.

DD (Direct Deposit) is particularly unsafe, although the teller makes sure the name of the account holder matches with the name you give them and everything you don't really have too much of a paper trail other than the receipt that you get from the teller.

Really only PP is the one that you get protection *but* you still may have to pay +4%.

The Paypal protection doesn't really help much. You can file a dispute but if the other person doesn't have any money in their paypal account you're still not getting your money back.

So, I should I avoid Direct Deposit ? I have a deal with someone here but he will only accept DD, he says that there are some frauds with EMT and he absolutely wants a DD.

... Personally I would avoid that. Seems kind of shady to me but you should make the call yourself.

They should accept other payment methods (EMT, DD, PP, Cash in hand, Money Order, etc.).

If he's AV'ed and has a good trader rating then you should be safe enough. Not everyone has EMT or paypal.

Oh yeah, he told me Direct Deposit or Money Order. What should I do to protect myself ? Ask for personal info I guess ?

He is AV's and a +2 rating, but none as a seller and they are 2-3 years old.

Generally I take a "innocent until proven guilty" approach to buying from the classifieds. If he doesn't have any negative feedback it's probably fine.

Most people on ASC are decent people.

Not true.
Pay with Visa/Mastercard, you can call up your credit card company, and they can pull payment, and you can get your full refund, Just say I paid for this item and didn't recieve it, usually they are pretty good on making things right.

Also I have paid by Paypal using bank account transfer, got scammed. Went through a long dispute process, and the other person didn't have any money, so I wasn't getting any money. I phoned up paypal, made a huge deal about it, asked for a manager, and he refunded my money.

well the good thing bout paypal is theres some one who promise you....on the front that you're safe. If not you can go b***h at him/ her.
I got scammed already once for DD, and file a RCMP report, but as usual the police don't care about these unless heavy crimes are involved (Murder, Rape, Kidnap, Arms trafficing etc)

DD's are fine. You can request information from him like his address and phone number so that the teller can verify that the money is going to the right account. Every time that I've done DD, the telerl has asked me if I had more information to match up as there are times where there will be other people with the same first and last name.

This was at both TD Canada Trust and Desjardin Credit Union

or you can just tell us who he is. LOL
