Helical gear
Hi,
I m planning a 400 fps AEG. 2 quicks ones: Helical gear, are all sets quiet or one is more quiet (high speed, high torque, standard)? Do I need the piston that goes with the set or can I use a stock piston? Thanks ![]() Bong

well i'm not sure about gears, but if you want to reduce noise, get a sorbo pad on your piston head, they have them at airsoftparts.ca, or search "sorbo pad" on the ASC

Yes helical gears are quieter than flat gears. Also, I'm pretty sure you'll need a half tooth piston for helical gears.

I think the annoying noise in an AEG is the whirring of the motor and gears, and not the tapping of the piston. Personally, unless I'm playing a scout / sniper role where silenced weapons are at an advantage, I'd be all for having louder muzzle report from my AEG, and less noise from the gear box. I'd much rather have a (more) realistic sound from the muzzle than have a sound like I'm being ambushed by angry sewing machines.
So from what I hear, helical gears are the way to go to tone down gear noise. I would assume that the slower the gear set is, the less noise it would make, so chances are, torque-up gears would be quieter than high speed. At least, their sound would be of a lower frequency and less piercing.

![]() I can tell (by having it installed on 2 AEGs) that tirador sorbo kit significanly reduce sound signature when shooting. It also improve mechbox life by absorbing some of the impact when the piston head hit the cylinder head

Helical gears can be quieter if they are shimmed properly. They have to be shimmed quite differently from flat cut gears. The gears have to be shimmed so the helical teeth center on each other in addition to having minimal lateral movement. This can take a long time to acheive. I can shim flat cuts in 10-15 minutes, helicals take an hour or more.
Half toothed pistons are only needed if you're running super/ultra torque up gears. Regular and torque up can use a normal piston, though using a half tooth won't hurt anything.

I actually kinda know that but I forgot! My friend has torque up helicals that used a half tooth, and I have worked on a gun with regular ratio helicals that used a regular piston. Doh! Last edited by Styrak; July 15th, 2008 at 12:18.. |

Here's my "silent set up" on one of my M4 at 400fps. Prom Double Torque up, Stock TM cylinder head with Sorbo pad, Duracon piston head and Magnum motor.

Prometheus Triple Torque also uses standard pistons. Only the Prometheus MAX Torque gear set requires half tooth pistons.
