say an upgrade M14 shoots 400fps with a .20g bb

with a .20g bb, say you have a range of 200ft, but your accuracy will be shit. easily affected by wind. lets say that at 150ft, you have a grouping of 1ft.

with a .28g bb in the same gun, your range might drop to 150ft, but your grouping will be say 6" or so. the velocity will probably be around 330fps or so. so overall, your accuracy will be better.

im sure i screwed up explaining it. there are better people who can explain it than me, but that is my understanding of using heavier bbs.
How much heavy BB's affects FPS is completely different for gas guns. They keep a lot more of their FPS because of gas expansion.

The longer the BB is in the barrel (heavier BB) the longer the gas has to expand and impart more energy on the BB.

Case in point:
My AUG shoots 390-400 on 0.20g, and 330 on 0.28g
The P229 I had shot 270 on 0.20g and 260 on 0.28g
My Hicapa shoots 330-340 on 0.20g and 300 on 0.28g

A lot less loss of speed (10FPS for the P229!) than AEG's.
