I always shim the top half to remove as much lateral play as I can. It seemes especially important to me on the bevel gear since it's the gear spining the fastest (besides the pinion) so having it bounce around could be bad news. The bevel also complicates matters - the axles are 90 degrees apart so the pinion actually puts an axial load on the bevel gear. So essentially the pinion pushes the bevel upwards - and therefore the teeth apart - and if there's to much play I suspect premature failure.
Well if you ever shim the top half of the bevel I'd be curious to see if the noise changes!
