I clean the inner barrel after every game. This just involves running a patch with a bit of silicone oil down my barrel using the cleaning rod, and then running a dry patch through to clean out the excess oil. If the gun got dirty on the outside, then I'll give that a bit of a cleaning too.
For internals, I make sure to get into my mechbox at least once a year (depending on which gun and how much it's been used) clean out and re-lube the gearbox and inspect for wear and tear on internals.

Taking 1 or 2 shots in semi to make sure your spring is uncompressed is one thing. Excessive full auto bursts without ammo is a different monster.
