Gun should still be pulling the 110 spring with a 9.6 and stock gears, as others said it's the pinion gear. Because of the wear, it may have to be adjusted to high for contact to even be made (screeching and full stop).
Some gun docs have a pinion pulling tool and can replace your pinion gear, which is cheaper than buying a new motor. Also, RC shops should have this tool.
Always make sure your wiring doesn't come in the way of your motor plate sitting around the bell of the motor, that'll cause the motor to sit too high as well.
