They're both actually single-stack magazines. The reservoir is roughly the same and both will have some problems pumping out a full mag of BBs once you upgrade to metal and an enhanced recoil spring - especially with high flow valves. But it can be done.
The 1911 has a slightly longer inner barrel as well, which may have a marginal benefit in velocity and accuracy over the 226.
The 226 is still a nice gun though. It feels nice in the hand, but it's a different platform. Different strokes for different folks. You're comparing apples to oranges. It's okay as a combat pistol, not great as a practical shooting platform for competitive use. It definitely can't be taken as far as a 1911 or 2011 as far as tuning goes.
