Because we use firearms to discharge projectiles, not for hunting, but for accumulation of simulated "kills" or points that have a direct bearing on the outcome of team competition.

Just because our guns are not firearms for the purposes of some legislation does not mean they are not still firearms. There are competition airgun shoots that do not use high-powered airguns (ie they are actual registerable firearms), and they are considered a sport.
