You can remove the safety, its not vital to the rifle. I fastened mine up with some washers; a lock washer, flat, then the lever, another flat and screw.
As for the mag, can you identify where its gettin' "hung up". Its likely that the barrel or the hop-up is not seated properly and the feed tower of the mag is not getting into the hole properly.
Take some pics of the mag well and post them up; am sure we can help ya out.
