I find it better if you rip the tape into tapered strips. That is, each strips ends with a point, with the middle being thicker. Gives it that more "tiger stripe" look than ending with solid blocks.
I did this on a couple model tanks back in the day. Works nicely.
And I second the Krylon paint, it's super awesome bacon!
