I don't know anything about your internals and posible prob's but As a Machenist I know it's posible to cut your inner barrel with no I'll affect. Because it's brass or other soft metal I would sugest you use a hack saw instead of a miter saw. 24 teeth per inch would be best. You need to be vary carefull when you cut that you don't squash the barrel, this is a lot easier then most realize. Once you've cut it take some emry cloth (metal version of sand paper available at any hardware store) and sand the inside cut edge till you have removed all burrs. you probably want to put a bit of a chamfer on it instead of just deburing it.
