Actually they are useful in some areas, scoping out detail at longer ranges, pinpointing your shots on smaller areas (like a bum exposed from behind a tree), verifying that you did in fact hit the guy, etc. Fussy eye relief and lack of fast acquisition are two downfalls of a magnified scope, but with both 1x RDS and 4x scopes, there are pros & cons between the two.

So no, it's not "window dressing" at all.
