You're not suppose to flex the hop up unit. You flex the outer barrel's chamber - flex it just enough for the hop up unit to slip past.
Note: when I say "chamber", I'm referring to the naming convention for the equivalent real steel part. The airsoft version's "chamber" doesn't work the same way as a real steel chamber, although it does work similarly. The "chamber" is the area that the hop up unit/barrel assembly moves around in.
