I personally use a pair of Motorola Talkabout radios, good qual not the shit, with a 30 dollar ear mic headset that I have rigged up to a homemade PTT button. I never have any issues with this, I can hear perfectly, talk with the press of a button, and the radios never give out on me. I have a thread with pictures and details on how I made the PTT on these forums already.
