The nozzle should be in it's forward-most position when the piston is fully back. When the piston releases (a small turn of the sector gear), that nozzle must be fully engaged (forward) in the hop-up in order to maximize your output. The tappet return spring accomplishes this.

Double feeding can also be caused by a dry or over-engaged hop-up as well. Lube the hop rubber, turn it fully off and see if double feeding continues.
