Funny, I had a battery do that in my G&P CQBR.
Wired it up, flicked the safety off, pulled the trigger, and freaked out upon seeing large amounts of smoke emanating from the crane stock. The shrink wrap on the battery was melted in a couple of spots.
It's never happened again, and I still don't know what caused it.
