It's just the momentum of the gears pulling the piston. In my experience I'd say it's entirely normal. Just so you know, there's no such thing as gear timing really... as long as your sector gear isn't engaging the piston when you reassemble, you really can't go wrong.

Some people prefer to set the bevel gear so it's engaging the anti-reversal latch when the sector gear's in a specific position, but it's really all a bit of hocus pocus; what works on one gun won't necessarily work on another.
